Domingo Chaves is interested in plant leaves, which he traces and collects in a wide variety of locations. The natural, fragile structure of the leaf surface—its delicate veins and water channels—forms the basis of his pictorial supports. As a living material that remains in a state of process and transformation, it raises questions of immediacy and uniqueness at the very moment it is viewed. His intervention begins where much is already present. The act of painting oscillates between imitation and differentiation, becoming a testimony to a temporary act of attention without permanence.

LOST PIECES FOUND PARTS brings together works created on large-scale plant leaves of non-European origin with found materials gathered from the immediate surroundings of the monastery ponds in St. Florian. Chaves’s working process unfolds in a continuous cycle of searching, collecting, discarding, and losing both materials and image ideas.
